Curiosity is at the heart of my work—it drives me to question, challenge, and explore new directions. There is always something new to discover, and this endless pursuit of knowledge keeps leading me down unexpected paths. I believe that to think is to make, and to make is to understand. That is why I never stop questioning and remain deeply engaged in the process of both thinking and creating. For me, architecture is not just about designing spaces but about crafting experiences—blending imagination with tangible reality, where every idea takes form through a thoughtful and meticulous process.

At KimYooJin Architects, we see design as an evolving dialogue between creativity and craftsmanship. Our studio is a space where imagination is transformed into built form, spanning architecture, furniture, and objects. We believe that without craftsmanship, imagination remains an illusion. True design emerges through the hands of skilled artisans who bring ideas to life with care and passion. Collaborating with these craftsmen is one of the most fulfilling aspects of our work—listening to their stories, understanding their techniques, and integrating their expertise into every detail. With a commitment to quality at all scales and across various disciplines, we work alongside specialists from diverse fields to develop projects that are not only well-crafted but also deeply meaningful.

‘Blocks’ House, 2016-2018

The ‘Block House’ is an architectural design where blocks, transcending the mere category of a house, harmoniously stack to embody both space and functionality. These blocks, arranged in various sizes and angles, form a unique exterior while efficiently utilizing the internal space. The combination of blocks is as follows: a variety of blocks containing different functions stack together to form the house. Particularly, the topmost block is tilted at about 10 degrees to provide a panoramic view. This structure is built with concrete to ensure stability and robustness, further reinforced by double slabs for enhanced safety. Additionally, the exterior walls, finished with decorative bricks, add to the beauty with changing shades over time.

Openness in space is a key feature, with large windows installed facing the garden and east-west directions to embrace sunlight. Moreover, outdoor seating areas with shade offer serene spaces for communion with nature.

Attention to detail elevates the ‘Block House’ into something truly special. The kitchen table is crafted from walnut wood slabs, complemented by oak wood chairs, creating a warm and natural ambiance. Furthermore, the upper floor and staircase areas are finished with walnut wood, adding a sense of luxury. Lastly, the central terrace and rooftop terrace are finished respectively with exterior-grade timber decking and stone tiles, tailored to the characteristics of the spaces.
